6CSH’s Problem Page

In Miss Shearer’s Fresh Start group we have been reading problem pages. Below is a problem that was sent to us by Embarrassed Kelly in Burnley.

Dear 6CSH

My family is so embarrassing! On Friday nights we go to the disco in the local club. (I’m eleven and my brother is nine.) As soon as the music starts, my dad turns into a windmill! He says he’s dancing but he looks stupid. I can see my friends stare and I think they are sniggering at him. I just pretend I’m not with him. What can I do?

Embarrassed Kelly, Burnley.

What advice would you give?

For example: EXCELLENT = 5p + 24p + 3p + 5p + 12p + 12p + 5p + 14p + 20p = £1.00

For every word you make you can earn 5HPs! Leave a comment below with your answers.

Book Review of Phillip Pullman – Clockwork

By Miss Shearer’s Fresh Start Group

Book title: Clockwork
Author: Phillip Pullman
No. of pages: 92

This story took place in a small village in Germany called Schatzberg. Some parts also took place at the Great Clock of Glockenheim, the White Horse Tavern, the forest, the palace and Dr Kalmenius’ workshop.

The main characters of the story were:
Gretl – a little girl, the daughter of the pub landlord
Dr Kalmenius – evil but genius clockwork maker
Fritz – fictional story teller
Prince Otto – father of Prince Florian with a clockwork heart
Prince Florian –  a baby made from clockwork
Karl – an apprentice clockwork maker

Dalton’s highlight of the book was when the little clockwork knight (Sir Ironsoul) kills Karl because he accidentally said the word devil.

Christopher’s favourite part was when Prince Florian’s father Prince Otto returned from their hunting trip with a clockwork heart an a moving arm.

Chase’s favourite part of the book was when Fritz got to an exciting part of his story and at that moment Dr Kalmenius, a character in his story, walked in the door of the pub!

Chelsea’s highlight was when Gretl found Prince Florian trapped in the clock tower and stayed with him to look after him.

We thought that the ending was a little weak because we expected the evil Dr Kalmenius to return!

We would recommend this book as we thought it was fantastic and really enjoyed it. Dalton thinks it is the best book he has ever read, Chase thought it was very interesting but Chelsea thinks that only older children should read it.

GRAFFITI – is it art or vandalism?

Look at the picture above. This is just one example of the graffiti we see on our streets everyday.

But do you think it is art? Or do you think it is vandalism? Should people be allowed to graffiti on the streets or not? What do you think?

Leave a comment below letting us know your thoughts!

Lyrical Genius…

This weekend 6CSH Maths Group were challenged to rewrite a song to help us with Maths Revision. Here are some examples…. hope you like them!

Josh – (own rap)

I just chill in the bath thinking about maths
Chilling in the bath douing my times tables
OMG I think they need cables
12 x 12 = 144
6 x 6 = 36
Thats how I get my rhythm by chilling in the bath thinking about SATs
I try so hard to do good in my best
Try so hard to forget about the rest
Just concentrate on the question
When you get put off its like getting a little infection
Maths is hard but I used PRIME to do it
Chilling in the class with friends and teachers
At least they known I can do it
Chill in the class
Then teachers shout, “Get on with your maths!”
I get a lil shock but I will do my best
Don’t know division that much but I’ll learn the rest
New methods everyday day is like I’m turning super
Chilling with friends and doing maths is all I need to do now.

Courtney – Maths Test

(sing this along to the tune of Thriller)

Its close to maths test time,
My calculators hidden in my bag.
Sat at the table,
I see a sight that almost stops my heart.
I try to cover it,
But a hand slams on the table before I make it.
I start to freeze,
As horror looks me right between the eyes… I MULTIPLY!!!!

Cause its the teacher,
Giving me a fright.
And my excuses aren’t going to save me from the teacher about to strike.
You know the teacher,
Is giving me a fright!
My protractor is tucked away,
but my calculator is in full sight! OH!
